Financing

As a business grows and develops what are your best options for funding growth? This becomes the most important question.

It is essential that you choose the right source and style of funding for the opportunities ahead. This includes where the assets are held. It could be you wish to fund a Management Buy Out, or expansion into new premises, or the purchase of equipment.

There are a number of options to consider including:
  • Equity – represented by retained profits in your business or new investment by you or other investors. Sources include your friends, even staff, business angels and venture capital providers. It could even be pension funds, this requires specialist advice but can be quite tax efficient.
  • Overdrafts- usually available from your bank but can be recalled a relatively short notice. This is used most commonly for working capital requirements rather than significant growth funding.
  • Term loans – from banks or other financial institutions. This could include asset finance such as hire purchase and leasing schemes. This is usually secured against the assets of the business.
  • Invoice financing – The various forms of lending against the strength of the invoices you have sent to your customers.
  • Other alternates – There are often other ways to provide finance dependent on the circumstances and how the money will be used.
